Norwegian Cruising Guide

by Phyllis Nickel

Having visited the west coast of Norway as a student on a German fisheries research ship many moons ago, I have remained enthralled by the extraordinary beauty of the fjords and have promised that some day I would make it back. Small wonder then that my senses perked up when I learned about the Norwegian Cruising Guide by Phyllis Nickel; writer, photographer and live aboard cruiser.

Based on earlier editions by Mark Brackenbury and John Armitage, she took over the guide in 2002 having cruised the region for two years. This is the original and most complete English language guide for mariners to the coasts of Norway, Svalbard (Spitsbergen), Bjørnøya (Bear Island) and the SW coast of Sweden. It is available as an E-Book and is over 450 pages covering general information on cruising the area plus descriptions of 745 ports and anchorages with information on approaches, where to anchor/tie up, marine services and shore-based activities and services.

For copyright reasons, they have encrypted Volume 1, which covers the general cruising information for Norway. The encryption disables printing the pages or even copying out text segments. To make up for this, they have however not done this for the main part of the book, Volume 2, which covers the actual destinations in nearly 400 pages with a few pictures. Each chapter has an overview chart with all the harbors covered marked on it. Each of these ports is briefly described giving some information on what is available in the way of services, reference is made to the chart(s) needed, and to a volume of Den Norske Los, which has the corresponding maps and where available aerial photographs of the harbor. These books are no longer available in English, so hopefully the authors will add these graphics to a future edition.

In all this the guide provides a voluminous amount of information, and for anyone cruising Norway it is most certainly a ‘must have’.
